Christian Democratic Union (CDU)
The Christian Democratic Union is a political party and was founded between 1945 and 1950. It provided the first Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Konrad Adenauer. It is at home in the center-right of the political spectrum and has always seen itself as the conservative force. Since the founding of the Federal Republic, the “Union”, together with its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) was the conservative bloc in Germany. However, the CSU only plays a role in the state of Bavaria. The current leader of the CDU is Friedrich Merz, while for the CSU it is Markus Söder.
During Angela Merkel’s reign, the CDU moved very far to the left. Today, the Christian Democratic Union is virtually indistinguishable from classic left-wing parties. Conservative values are now frowned upon by most CDU deputies. As a result of this transformation of Merkel’s 16-year rule, the CDU/CSU has lost over 150,000 members.
For a very long time, the CDU was a save habour for conservative voters. Unfortunally this era has gone long time ago.
